Poker Champs 2012 Tournament

UP TO R1.44MILLION ON THE CARDS

“The Montecasino Poker Champs tournament is not just for professionals however,” continues MacIntyre. “If poker is something you’ve always wanted to try but have been wary to experiment with because of common misconceptions or uncertainty, Montecasino has experienced gaming staff to assist you in learning the rules and principles so that you too can enjoy this fast-paced and thrilling game. Our staff are available at all times to answer any questions or assist where needed and, whether you’re playing on any of our six poker tables or starting out on one of our 60 poker machines, are well trained to give you the best advice possible.”

Whether you’re an aspiring amateur or professional poker player, Montecasino is offering you more than one way to win in the Montecasino Poker Champs 2012 tournament. Either buy-in to the main event for R10 000 at the main cash desk in the casino; or enter one of the Satellites in the Montecasino Poker Lounge over the next two and a half months and stand the chance to win your seat.  Should you not have any luck in the Satellites, Montecasino will automatically enter you into a draw to stand a further chance to win a spot.

Satellites with a R1 100 buy-in will be hosted every Thursday in January and February at 19:00, R1 500 buy-in Satellites at 18:00 every Sunday in March, and R600 buy-in Satellites at 19:30 every Monday in March. Every Wednesday in March will also see R1 100 buy-in Satellites at 19:30. Be sure to enter the Satellites, as the higher the number of entrants in the Satellites the more seats available to win in the Montecasino Poker Champs 2011 Tournament.

All tournaments will be Freeze Out, apart from the tournament on Thursday 22 March, which will allow for re-buys and add-ons. Registration for all Satellites will take place at the Poker Lounge approximately two-and-a-half hours before each game is due to start.

Registration for the Montecasino Poker Champs 2012 Tournament main event is now open at the Montecasino Cash Desk. Positive identification is required for both registration and tournament entry into both the main event and Satellite Tournaments. Starting stacks are set at R30 000.

For further information on dates, times and registration details for the Montecasino Poker Champs 2012 main tournament, Satellites, the Poker Lounge, or any of our other 2012 tournaments, please visit www.montecasino.co.za .

Montecasino – We’ve Got It!

DID YOU KNOW?
• There is no universally accepted theory on the true origins of poker, but the most commonly held belief is that it was derived from the Persian game of ‘As Nas’ – a game played using 25 cards, including five different suits. The basis for this belief is that hand rankings were used much as we know them today, such as 3-of-a-kind. Other theorists believe poker originated in China as long ago as 900AD.
• There is speculation that the word ‘Poker’ originates from the expression ‘Hocus-Pocus’ which is commonly used by those adept at slight-of-hand, i.e. magicians.
• The first known written reference to poker was made by Jonathan H. Green in 1834 in his work entitled ‘An Exposure of Arts & Miseries of Gambling.’ He was a gambler who spoke of rules referring to what he called the ‘Cheating Game’, which was then being played on Mississippi riverboats. Speculation is that the ‘River’ card, as we know it, was named after these rivers.
• The King of Spaces on a deck of playing cards represents David, King of Israel; the King of Clubs represents Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia; the King of Hearts is Charlemagne, King of France; and the King of Diamonds is Caesar Augustus, Emperor of Rome.
• In 1937, a fifth suit was created, in addition to Clubs, Hearts, Spades and Diamonds, and included in the regular deck of cards. It was called the ‘Eagle’ and the suit was green in colour, but this never caught on because it meant that players would have had to buy a whole new deck of cards just to play poker. It would also have changed the rules.
• In the book "Casino Royale" by Ian Fleming published in 1952, James Bond played the game of Baccarat. In the movie, made 50 years later, the game Bond plays is Texas Hold’em. This change was due the game’s increasing worldwide popularity.
• The largest cash amount ever won in a poker tournament is $12 million. It was won by Jamie Gold in the 2006 World Series of Poker – Main Event.
