Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre has undergone a R2 million face-lift to celebrate our 500th Production – THE HISTORY BOYS.

The face-lift includes new seats in our Main Theatre auditorium and an increased capacity (we can now seat 390 people) as well as a new colour scheme. Our foyer areas have been re-painted and fitted with new light fittings. We have managed to salvage the glorious old chandelier from the Alhambra Theatre and that has been hung as the centrepiece in our foyer. Our box office has been spruced up to make it easier for patrons to purchase tickets, and our front entrance has also got a new look!

The History Boys is our 500th Production and Pieter Toerien is delighted to be able to open our new-look Main Theatre with what has to be one of the best plays of the last decade!

South Africa's foremost theatre impresario, Pieter Toerien opened Pieter Toerien's Theatre & Studio at Montecasino with the record breaking comedy hit 'Defending the Caveman' in November 2000.

Pieter Toerien's first foray into show business was at the age of 17. Hanging in his office is a charcoal portrait dated 1965 and inscribed: To Pieter, with my love and deep thanks, Marlene.

He brought Marlene Dietrich to South Africa when he was 20 years old. Recently he successfully co-produced the Lion King held at Montecasino, which broke box office records, and earned him a Naledi award in 2007 for Best Production of a Musical alongside Lebo M.

With a theatre career spanning more than 35 years and several theatrical awards under his belt, Toerien is responsible for bringing the best in commercial theatre from the west to millions of theatre goers in South Africa.

He regards his Montecasino theatre as a platform and a theatrical home and aims to give both new and established artists opportunities for new directions and growth.

Pieter Toerien's Theatre & Studio has been home to some of the best theatre productions with both local and international stars gracing its stage including Bea Arthur, Moira Lister, Bill Flynn, Tim Plewman, Michael Richard, Tobie Cronje, Pieter-Dirk Uys, Marc Lottering and Rex Garner, Fiona Ramsay, Alan Committie, Ashley Dowds and Neels Van Jaarsveld.
