Jacaranda 94.2 and Big Concerts present
Rain A Tribute to the Beatles
Direct from their phenomenally successful Broadway engagement, the internationally acclaimed Beatles concert, Rain – A Tribute to the Beatles, makes its debut in South Africa at the Teatro at Montecasino, Johannesburg from 23rd August 2011 for a limited season only, presented by Jacaranda 94.2.
“Rain” is a giddy two-hour trip, joyful in its execution, and for those who adore The Beatles you simply cannot go wrong here". PETER FELDMAN, Citizen "It’s a full blast of the great hits. The audience stands, waves and claps. You have to move it, move it." JENNIFER DE KLERK, Artslink “The members of Rain resembled exact twins of John, Paul, Ringo and George, and had the musical talent to match.” CHRISTINE GREYVENSTEIN, Coup Magazine
As “the next best thing to seeing The Beatles!” (Associated Press), RAIN performs the full range of The Beatles' discography live onstage, including the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience. Together longer than The Beatles, RAIN has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance in this multi-media concert, that’s as infectious as it is transporting. From the early hits to later classics (I Want To Hold Your Hand, Hard Day’s Night, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Let It Be, Come Together, Hey Jude and more), this adoring tribute will take you back to a time when all you needed was love, and a little help from your friends! Like The Beatles, the onstage members of RAIN are not only supreme musicians, but electrifying performers in their own right who will have parents, grandparents and kids singing along in this time-warp of nostalgia.

Biographies of the band
Mac Ruffing (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) hails from Cleveland, Ohio. He started playing the drums as a teen, but found a Hofner bass and had to have it. Relocating to Southern California, he played in several original and cover bands, eventually touring worldwide. Mac is naturally right-handed, but taught himself to play left-handed. He also plays the piano and guitar. When the chance came to join RAIN, Mac immersed himself in the role and looks forward to recreating the magic of The Beatles at every show.
Jimmy Pou (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth) was born in Miami, Florida into a Cuban family surrounded by rhythmic music. Seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show inspired him to become a guitarist. He played “George” in Beatlemania in Los Angeles, Chicago and world tour; joined “1964 the Tribute” performing at Carnegie Hall; created his solo show “An Evening With George;” performed with “Beatlemania Now” and has recorded three CDs of his own original music. Jimmy is thrilled to be part of RAIN and playing with his buddies from the Beatlemania days. www.jimmypou.com
Douglas Cox (Drums, percussion, vocals) was born in Kansas City and raised in Texas. Through his parents’ records he discovered Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly but was profoundly moved by one, The Beatles “Ticket to Ride.” Doug has drummed for 16 years in Dallas’ top Beatles tribute A Hard Night’s Day. He has many memories pounding those “pagan skins” in Las Vegas, Liverpool, in London recording videos with VH-1 in Abbey Road Studio 2, and backing Tony Sheridan in Hamburg’s Kaiserkeller. Musicians back home say Doug has always naturally had that signature Ringo style, even as a 12 year old learning the trap set.
Jimmy Irizarry (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Harmonica) is from Chicago, IL and began singing and playing the music of his favorite band, The Beatles, at the age of 12. He performed in local Chicago Beatle bands and learned the harmonica to master some of his early Beatle favorites. Years later Jim visited Liverpool for Beatle Week and made several appearances at the Cavern Club. He naturally captures the look and sound of Lennon and transforms himself through all eras of The Beatles as well as recreating John’s famous humor and onstage antics.
Chris Smallwood (Keyboard, Percussion)grew up in Kentucky. He fell in love with Beatles music as a young kid, but didn’t fall onto a piano bench until high school, when he broke his leg. Just two years later, he was invited to Kentucky’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts Program. In 2008, Chris received a bachelor of music from Belmont University in Nashville, and in 2010 earned his master of music from the University of Louisville. Chris and his wife, Nicki, live in Nashville.
History of RAIN
Feb. 9, 1964. A Sunday night that would change the course of popular music, popular culture - and history, forever! Millions of Americans tuned into The Ed Sullivan Show to watch a group of four mop-topped Englishmen in dark suits who called themselves The Beatles. What they witnessed was a new and exciting brand of melodic, guitar-and-harmonies-driven rock 'n' roll that was as infectious as it was original and unique. Little did the members of RAIN know that they would themselves come together in a band, forging a career that would keep them together longer than The Beatles! All this while raising the bar for professionalism and preserving the legacy of the immortal band's recorded music on stage to wildly enthusiastic audiences. Spanning the generations, their audiences include the vast majority of older fans who never got to see The Beatles perform live, and fans who were not yet born when The Beatles hit America.
The story of RAIN actually begins in the mid 1970s when keyboardist Mark Lewis joined forces with four other local musicians who together formed the band that was originally called “Reign” and played throughout the Los Angeles/Orange County, CA area. With their mutual love for the music of The Beatles, Reign was in demand to play Beatles music and rode an enormous wave of nostalgia for the band that had broken up in 1970. Before long they had built a strong devoted following in and around Los Angeles. Following numerous misspellings in the media and advertising, “Reign” became RAIN (also the title of a 1966 Beatles single). A big break came for RAIN when Dick Clark hired them to record the music for the 1979 made-for-TV movie Birth of the Beatles.
RAIN’s intention was not just to cover Beatle songs, but to take it to a new level. To do songs that The Beatles had never performed live, and do them note-for-note, just like the records. At this time, ‘tribute bands’ were non-existent.
Since the 1980s, for the five longtime band members – Joey Curatolo (vocals, bass, guitar, piano), Joe Bithorn (vocals, lead guitar, guitar synthesizer), Ralph Castelli (vocals, drums, percussion), the addition of Steve Landes (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica) in 1998 – all of whom performed in the hit Broadway and touring productions of Beatlemania - and Mark Lewis, RAIN’s founding member (keyboards, percussion), the music is first and foremost. For more than two decades, RAIN has distinguished itself by focusing on details, always being faithful to The Beatles with the ultimate goal of delivering a perfect note-for-note performance. All the music is performed live, with no pre-recorded tapes or sequences. They approach The Beatles music with the same respect a classical musician treats classical music. They worked hard for many years, studying each song, each note, movement and nuance…both vocally and musically. Today, they have a repertoire of over 200 Beatle songs. The members of RAIN are extraordinarily talented musicians in their own right and this becomes more evident with each show they do. RAIN audiences experience their own personal journey back to a time when Peace and Love was everyone’s mantra
It’s difficult to believe that it has been more than four decades since The Beatles first came to America and that two of our beloved idols left us too soon. Equally hard to believe is the fact that this band whose music touched so many millions of people around the world was only experienced live in concert by very few. Their final concert tour was in 1966, long before the release of many of their classic albums such as “Sgt. Pepper,” “The White Album” and “Abbey Road.” This left a tremendous void in the music world and concert halls which now has been filled by RAIN.
