Montecasino Book Drive

Montecasino gives books to Diepsloot school

Montecasino handed over 200 books, together with crossword puzzle books donated by Caxton and Fourways Review, to Paradise Bend Primary School on the 26th of October. The books were collected in a book drive run by Montecasino and Skoobs Theatre of Books in honour of World Literacy Month in September, and were donated, mostly by staff members, as well as guests and members of the public, at a depository appropriately located at Skoobs.

Paradise Bend Primary School accommodates about 1 000 learners from the community and is a new beneficiary of Montecasino’s, which has invested heavily over the years in CSI activities that are primarily focused on educational initiatives in schools in the Diepsloot area, 10km from the precinct and home to many staff members.

Lisa Sukdev, Montecasino’s Public Relations Manager, said at the handover, “Literacy is the foundation of learning and with a high proportion of schools in disadvantaged areas lacking libraries, it is important to try to make a difference to those learners’ lives. It’s a privilege to be able to contribute to improving literacy in local disadvantaged communities. This initiative is not merely a token gesture. In 2018, students will submit book reviews on a monthly, for a R200 reward and to have their review published in the Fourways Review.

Tsogo Sun’s over-arching CSI programmes are primarily focused on education and training for disadvantaged learners, reaching more than 40 000 children and youth around the country. The programmes for primary grades include early childhood development projects, life skills training, and the Tsogo Sun Moves for Life national chess programme, and for high school students they include peer-driven leadership training, career development, and preparation for employment.
